Cafezinho, or Brazilian Coffee, is made by boiling water and sugar, adding coffee grounds, and filtering out the coffee mixture. Big Joe is a great tool to help you easily filter your Brazilian brew, as it has greater capacity than other pour over models and doesn’t easily clog. It can really help speed up the final part of the Brazilian process.
Cold brew is similar to Cafezinho or Brazilian Coffee. However, instead of adding the coffee grounds to hot water, you add the coffee grounds to cool water and let it steep in the fridge overnight. Then, you filter out the final mixture. Similar to Brazilian Coffee, you can use Big Joe for the filtering step to ensure you eliminate the grittiness and are left with a smooth batch.
There are many ways to reduce the acid taste in coffee. Some ways include choosing a darker roast, adding milk, cinnamon, or natural sweeteners, choosing low acid beans, or switching to making cold brew.
Experts recommend 12 oz. of water for every 20 grams of coarsely ground coffee. You can further customize your experience with a coffee grinder that can grind your beans in different sizes. Use a scale to ensure you have the right amount of coffee grounds. Here are some common examples to make brewing coffee better:
- 20 oz. of water for every 36 grams (or 1/2 cup) of coffee
- 36 oz. of water for every 60 grams (or ¾ cup) of coffee
- 64 oz. of water for every 112 grams (1 ¼ cups) of coffee

The food-safe, BPA-free polypropylene used to make the Big Joe Coffeemaker is Type #5 (the industry identification code for the type of PP resin), and it is recyclable. Plastic No. 5 (Polypropylene or PP) is a thermoplastic polymer valued for its heat and solvents resistance and resistance to fatigue (permanent bending), strength, toughness, and flexibility. It is considered one of the safest plastics as it does not release any chemicals into food or liquids. It can be found in microwave-safe yogurt cups, baby bottles, medicine bottles, and plates.
Polypropylene can be recycled back to its original fiber form or made into items such as buckets, paint buckets, car bumpers, car battery boxes, furniture, and flower pots.
Paper filters are compatible with the Big Joe Pour Over Coffee Maker and most 10 or 12-cup home and commercial pour over/drip coffee makers typically used by restaurants, cafes, office machines, cafeterias, convenience stores, and churches, including Bunn, Fetco, Mr. Coffee, Hamilton Beach, Cuisinart, Bloomfield, and Royal Cup.
