The History of Pour Over Coffee

The History of Pour Over Coffee

We all love coffee, but at Big Joe, one coffee brewing method takes the cake—pour over coffee. Coffee has been around for thousands of years, initially discovered in Ethiopia. However, pour over coffee is only a little more than a century old. In this article, we’ll answer all your questions about pour over coffee and break down the history of our favorite brewing method.

For thousands of years, coffee was bitter and gritty. Even in the late 19th century when cafe culture began to rapidly spread across Europe and new percolation devices were invented, coffee was hard to drink and frequently over-extracted. Coffee grounds were left in the drink, the beverage often tasted burnt from boiled coffee grounds, and it was a pain to clean up. Some of these issues could be resolved with a cloth coffee filter, but many could not afford them at the time.

When was pour over coffee invented?

In the first decade of the 20th century in Germany, Melitta Bentz set out to solve the issues she, and many others had, with how coffee was brewed. She created pour over coffee by making holes in a brass pot and used blotting paper as a filter. She shared this invention with her friends, who began using it themselves. She officially received a patent in June 1908 from the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin and then started her business, M. Bentz, soon after.

Who invented pour over coffee?

Amalie Auguste Melitta Bentz was a German entrepreneur and the inventor of pour over coffee and the first person to use a paper coffee filter to brew coffee. The idea for pour over coffee originates from her frustrations with how coffee was brewed and consumed at the time. Her invention received many iterations over the years.
